Pada 14 Februari 2009, hampir sebulan sesudah Israel mengadakan gencatan senjata secara sepihak di Gaza, bocah berusia 13 tahun Hammad Silmiya menggembalakan domba dan kambingnya di timur laut Gaza, sekitar 500 meter dari batas dengan Israel. Jeep militer Israel yang berpatroli tiba-tiba menembak dia dan teman-temannya. Hammad ditembak di kepala dan dia meninggal seketika.
